The history of Cultural Association

This year Cultural Association name of Jan Kiepura in Krynica-Zdrój celebrate the 27th anniversary of its founding.

The originator of the Association was Bogusław Kaczyński, and the idea was realized by Mr Andrzej Piasek, who became the first president of the newly founded association and held that position twice for several years. Next presidents were: mr Eugeniusz Grolewski, Ms Lucyna Janus-Górka, Ms Barbara Cieniawa, and since 2004 up to this day Ms Małgorzata Mecznikowska – Gurgul.

On 14 May 1986 the statute of the association was officially registered and its activity started.

The aim of the Association is popularizing music, promoting the vocal art of Jan Kiepura, taking and carrying out projects linked with the history, culture and artistic life of Krynica-Zdrój. Other activities include cooperation with other cultural organizations in the town, participation in festivals and building Jan Kiepura theatre. Realization of the last project failed, others were carried out step by step.

The Association took part in the town’s projects e.g. erecting a monument in 1988 the work by Bronisław Chromy. The Association was awarded for the cooperation by the town authorities with a commemorative medal.

Since 1993 the Association has been issuing a Festival Gazette. At the beginning on its own, it was edited by Ms Danuta Chrostowska, and since 1997 together with Nowy Sącz division of Dziennik Polski, which has been accompanying all events organized by the Association.

During 26 years of the activity 159 concerts and 45 other events have been arranged. Regular events have been introduced, such as: since 2001 Vocal Music Days combined with Opera VocalismCourse, where under the guidance of outstanding professors of Academies of Music in Poland and Vocal Teachers Associations vocally talented young people from different parts of Poland can develop their singing skills.

Also since 2001 the Association has been cooperating with “Silesia” Music Promotion Institution in Katowice. Thanks to that cooperation every autumn a concert is held as a part of the National Festival of Music Competition Young Prizewinners. In Krynica-Zdrój then one can hear excellent young vocalists and instrumentalists, winners of prizes at various vocal and instrumental competitions.

Since 2002 with only one year break in 2006 the Summer Music Festival is organized. The artistic director since its very beginning has been the lecturer of the Academy of Music in Kraków, Krynica-born Prof. Mariola Cieniawa-Puchała. This year there will be 9th Summer Music Festival and its opening concert will be combined with the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Association.

For its activity the Association was distinguished with a diploma at meeting of the Regional Cultural Associations of the Nowy Sącz Province in 1994.

In 2002 which was proclaimed the “Kiepura Year” by the Polish Parliament the Association Board passed a resolution to erect a replica of Sosnowiec Jan Kiepura monument in Krynica Zdrój. It was the biggest and most difficult undertaking of the Association, which has made the name of Jan Kiepura an inherent part of the history of Krynica. It took two years to get the required documents and raise funds. Finally the monument was unveiled on 17 July 2004.

At present the Association staff consists of five persons: Małgorzata Miecznikowska – Gurgul – President, Katarzyna Zygmunt – Vice-President, Renata Fajkiel – Secretary, Andrzej Piasek - Treasurer and Anna Budzyńska - Member. With great amount of effort and dedication it is continuing all regular projects which have been organized for many years by Jan Kiepura Krynica Cultural Association.
